🌟 ❤️A significant signature for the protection of migrants: In May 2024, 33,685 migratory movements were observed in Djibouti (according to IOM), which equals an average of 1,087 per day, with most migrants coming from Ethiopia. Aware of their vulnerability, the Network for Better Migration Management (Réseau Associatif Meilleure Gestion Migratoire, MGM) provides them with essential basic services, including food, housing and healthcare. “Sometimes we simply hand them our mobile phones so that they can call their families and let them know that they are still alive”, reports one of the volunteers. With the support of the Better Migration Management Programme, coordinated by GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti and funded by the European Union and the German Government, 17 civil society organisations in Djibouti joined forces to form the network. 🤝💪 An important milestone has now been reached with the signing of a legal document in the presence of a representative of the judiciary, ensuring the legal recognition of the MGM 🖋️📜. 📚 The #AIDA Country Report on #Switzerland is OUT   ➡️In 2023, 30,223 people applied for asylum in Switzerland, an increase of over 20% compared to 2022.    👉The main countries of origin were Afghanistan, Türkiye, Eritrea, Algeria and Morocco.   ➡️More than 10% of new asylum applicants were unaccompanied minors.   ➡️The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) issued 26,667 asylum decisions at first instance.   ➡️The overall protection rate was 39.3%, rising to 78.4% when only in-merit decisions are considered.   ➡️There were 15,567 number of pending cases at first instance at the end of 2023.   👉In addition, 23,012 people from Ukraine applied for Status S in Switzerland in 2023 and 18,375 of them were granted it.   Read the full report here: 🔗bit.ly/4cCZt03

Tunesia is not a place of safety for people rescued from distress at sea!   Ahead of the Tunisian presidential elections, we are urging the EU and its member states together with other 62 NGOs, including Sea-Watch e.V., Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch to:   👉 end human rights violations against refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants by the Tunisian authorities! 👉 stop the crackdown on the civil society in Tunisia! 👉 cut all EU funding to Tunisian authorities complicit in human rights violations! 👉 not allow the disembarkation of refugees in Tunisia – Tunisia is not a place of safety for people rescued at sea!   “Refugees are not safe in Tunisia,” declares our political expert Marie Michel. “Human rights violations in Tunisia against people on the move have been documented in hundreds of cases, especially since spring 2023. There is no asylum system and no protection for refugees.”   Having established a Tunisian Search and Rescue Zone in June 2024, Europe must ensure that international law and human rights are followed – at sea and on Tunisian land! Call to End Discriminatory Practices Against Djiboutian Asylum Seekers in Egypt I strongly condemn the discriminatory practices that Djiboutian asylum seekers face in Egypt. Unlike other nationalities, they do not receive their asylum seeker cards immediately after registration. Worse still, some have their cases closed without explanation or justification. These actions constitute a serious violation of their fundamental rights, depriving them not only of protection but also of access to essential services. These practices must cease immediately. I call on UNHCR and the relevant authorities to act with transparency and fairness toward all asylum seekers, without discrimination based on nationality or origin. It is imperative that the rights of all individuals are respected in a just and impartial manner.

Today is World Refugee day. At TP we believe it is important to reflect on, not just the plight of refugees, but their positive impact on peace. Refugees are uniquely suited to addressing the root causes of their own displacement. They are an important part of any post-conflict scenario, and building peace through and within refugee communities is a critical step towards building peace in their countries of origin. People without documentation are often unable to access basic rights –education, employment, financial services and legal protections – leading to social stigma, economic marginalization and increased vulnerability to modern slavery. UNU-CPR, in partnership with The Freedom Fund, has developed policy recommendations to improve documentation access for migrants in Nepal and Brazil. In Nepal, systemic barriers deprive migrant groups of essential documentation, pushing vulnerable individuals into informal and exploitative work. In Brazil, many migrants and refugees, particularly from Haiti, Bolivia and Venezuela, face significant bureaucratic hurdles, discriminatory practices and financial constraints that impede their ability to obtain essential documents like identity cards and proof of address. Without documentation, individuals are often excluded from legal protections, limiting opportunities for regular employment and increasing the risk of modern slavery. 📢 Today, 95 NGOs, SOS Humanity included, urge the EU and its member states to safeguard the right to asylum in Europe and uphold their international obligations.   Ahead of the first plenary of the newly elected European Parliament, we call on the EU to abandon all proposals of ‘externalising’ asylum processing to countries outside the EU. These controversial proposals seek to dismantle the core tenet of international protection of refugees: that people have a right to seek asylum and have that claim individually examined.   As a non-governmental search and rescue organisation saving lives in the Central Mediterranean, we are experiencing the result of these externalisation agreements through the illegal actions of the so-called Libyan Coast Guard, for example.
